FERIOLO
Feriolo è una piccola parte di Baveno. Si trova a 3 chilometri dal centro della città.
Feriolo is a small part of Baveno. It is 3 kilometres from the city centre.
In passato era un villaggio si pescatori e scalpellini.
In the past it was a village of fishermen and stonecutters.
Molti uomini ma anche ragazzi giovani lavoravano nelle cave: era un lavoro faticoso.
A lot of men and also young boys worked in the quarries: it was hard work.
Al porto la gente metteva le pietre sulle barche per portarle a Milano e costruire monumenti e anche parti del Duomo.
In the harbour people put the stones on the boats to bring them to Milan and build monuments and also parts of the “Duomo”.
Oggi Feriolo è un paese turistico.
Nowadays Feriolo is a touristic village.
Soprattutto in estate molte persone vengono qui per passare le vacanze.
Especially in summer a lot of people come here to spend their holidays.
Ci sono molti campeggi e belle spiagge.
There are a lot of camping places and nice beaches.
LA CHIESA DI SAN CARLO
La chiesa è dedicata a S. Carlo.
The church is dedicated to Saint Charles.
Risale al 1831.
It dates back to 1831.
A volte quando piove molto il lago si alza.
Sometimes when it rains a lot the lake grows.
Di fronte alla chiesa si possono vedere due lapidi che mostrano due livelli molto alti.
On the front of the church you can see two gravestones showing two very high levels.
Il più alto risale al 1868 e l’acqua era 7 metri più alta del solito.
The highest dates back to 1868 and the water was 7 metres higher than usual.
L’altro vicino alla scalinata fa riferimento al 1993.
The other one near the stairway refers to 1993.
LA RISERVA NATURALE
Vicino a Feriolo c’è una riserva naturale.
Near Feriolo there is a natural reserve.
È importante perché molti uccelli che vanno verso il nord Europa vengono qui e si fermano per un po’.
It is important because a lot of birds moving to the Northern part of Europe come here and stop for a while.
IL MULO
Il mulo era un aiuto molto importante per gli uomini che lavoravano alle cave.
The mule was a very important help for men working in the quarries.
Usavano i muli per portare e spostare carichi pesanti.
They used the mules to bring and move heavy loads.
La statua di fronte alla chiesa è fatta con granito bianco.
The statue in front of the church is made with white granite.
È abbastanza nuova perché l’hanno messa lì la scorsa estate.
It is quite new because they put it there the last summer.
UN TRAGEDIA NEL PASSATO
Nel 1867 ci fu una frana che causò il crollo della strada del Sempione e di alcune abitazioni nel lago.
In 1867 there was a landslide that caused the breakdown of the Sempione road and some houses in the lake.
Questa tragedia causò la morte di 17 persone.
This tragedy caused the death of seventeen people.
Fu un errore umano.
It was a human mistake.
